Royal Canadian Legion Charitable Foundation grant to Four Counties Health Services Foundation

On Monday, March 17, 2008, FCHS Foundation received a cheque for $9366.72 for the purchase of a HillRom VersaCare bed system to be used in the active care nursing unit. Representatives from Zone A5 and the Newbury and Glencoe Legion branches were in attendance.

During the presentation and demonstration of the VersaCare bed it was very evident that it is a state of the art bed that has many benefits for the patient and care team.

These include improved patient safety and comfort and continuous delivery of pressure relief to prevent pressure ulcers. As well the bed assists the care giving team by making it easier to care and turn patients, thereby preventing staff injuries.
A few of the  many features that increase patient’s safety and comfort include such capabilities as adjustable bed height (high to very low to increase ease of getting in and out of bed) and significant configurability which allows the patient to sit up and reposition as the bed can actually assume a chair position as well as many different positions. The mattress is also more comfortable and has different pressure zones and levels which prevent and/or help heal pressure wounds. As well, the bed can detect and notify the care team when a patient status or position changes.

The staff are looking forward to using the bed as patient transfers, examinations, provision of  normal care and transport are all easier with the VersaCare bed. According to Lynda Robinson, Director of Patient Services at the Four Counties site, this bed will not only be of great benefit to the care and safety of the patients, it will add to the health and safety of the nursing staff.

The Royal Canadian Legion, Ontario Provincial Command Branches and Ladies’ Auxiliaries Charitable Foundation has been operating since 1981 and each year reviews applications for medical equipment and research funding, awarding grants to community medical facilities and organizations across the province.  This is the third such grant to be awarded to Four Counties. To date including this grant, gifts from the various local branches of the Legion, the Zone and the Foundation have totaled in excess of $115,000 and we are most grateful for their support.

Attending the presentation were Steve Dausett, Commander of Zone A5; Robert Lloyd, President - Glencoe Branch 219; Brenda Nethercott, Secretary - Glencoe Branch 219 and  Jerry Rilett, President - Newbury Branch 583.
